The Area
The south end of Lake Oscawana is 1:15h from Manhattan, 40 min from White Plains, 20 min from Cold Spring. Grocery shopping, movie theater and liquor stores are 15 minutes away and a small convenience store is in 10 minutes walking distance. Everything you need is close by, yet far enough away to not bother, if you rather enjoy the serenity of the lake.
Where to eat
Some of our favorites are The Farmer and the Fish in Purdys (fancy farm to table), the Rooster’s Wings & Brew for really really hot wings and a KISS pinball machine, 901 for wood oven pizza in Mohegan Lake, Char for steak on the way to Lake Mahopac, Le Bouchon for French cuisine in Cold Spring and the Valley Restaurant at the Garrison (in Garrison) for more farm to table and modern Shakespeare performances in the summer.
Where to see art
A hidden gem by the Hudson is Magazzino Italian Art on the route to Cold Spring: Magazzino Italian Art is a museum and research center dedicated to advancing scholarship and public appreciation of postwar and contemporary Italian art in the United States.
Beacon also has plenty of art galleries, especially the Dia Beacon, and check out the antiques and galleries pedestrian zone in Newburgh and the artsy vibe of Rhinebeck further up north.
Where to shop
For great boutique stores& antique shops hit up Cold Spring on the Hudson, Newburgh, New Paltz, Beacon and Rhinebeck.
For big box shopping Mohegan Lake is home to Walmart, Acme Groceries, Home Sense, Home Goods, Home Depot, Best Buy, Petco etc. (right near the Rooster!)
